Saint Patrick 978-0-89942-385-2
One of 101 titles in the St. Joseph Picture Book Series, this book by popular author Rev. Jude Winkler, OFM. Conv. provides children with an explanation of who Saint Patrick was. Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, and his story is full of faith, courage, and adventure! He was born in Britain around the year 385, but when he was just 16 years old, something scary happened—he was captured by pirates and taken to Ireland as a slave! He had to work very hard as a shepherd, looking after sheep. Even though he was scared and far from home, Patrick prayed to God every day, asking for strength.
After six long years, Patrick escaped and returned home to his family. But he didn’t forget about the people of Ireland. He believed God was calling him to go back and share the message of Jesus with them. So, Patrick became a priest and later a bishop, and he returned to Ireland to spread the Good News of Christianity. Saint Patrick traveled all over Ireland, teaching people about God’s love. One of the ways he explained the Holy Trinity—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—was by using a shamrock, a small plant with three leaves. The three leaves helped people understand that God is three persons in one.
Thanks to St. Patrick, many people in Ireland became Christians, and he is still remembered for his strong faith and his bravery. Today, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day every March 17th, remembering his life and the good work he did.
St. Patrick teaches us to trust in God, even when life is hard, and to share God’s love with others, just like he did with the people of Ireland.
