In 1939, native-born Polish and Belarusian citizen Sergei Bravo embarked on a journey to save his motherland from the Nazi regime's destructive forces, first as an air defense sergeant and later as a Soviet NKVD agent. In a war-torn country marred by the Holocaust, Sergei Bravo endures on battle after another to protect his homeland and preserve historical districts. Sergei also longs for home and his life as a teacher and marriage to Marta, a young Catholic woman who works at her father's bakery. Sergei leaves her on two occasions, first to defend Warsaw, and then to join the NKVD ranks but always vowing to return to Marta and stay by her side forever. Frank loses support from Hitler as the Red Army's Marshal's Konev and Zhukov race to Berlin with plans of seizing Krakow on the way.
