"Is there not a vigorous and united movement in all countries to cast down the Church of Christ from power and place? Is there not a feverish and ever-busy endeavour to get rid of the necessity of religion in public transactions? An attempt to su-persede religion altogether, as far as it is external or objective, as far as it is displayed in ordinances, or can be expressed by written words—to confine it to our inward feelings, and thus, considering how variable, how evanescent our feelings are, an attempt, in fact, to destroy religion?" All four of St. John Henry Newman's Advent sermons on the Antichrist that are here compiled are based on the teachings of the Bible and the Church Fathers. Almost 200 years have passed since he provided this glimpse into the not-too-dis-tant future, but his observations sound as if they were writ-ten and delivered in the present day. JOHN HENRY NEWMAN (1801–1890) was an influential and controversial figure in the 19th-century religious history of England as a theologian, academic, intellectual, philosopher, polymath, historian, writer, scholar, and poet. He began his life's work as an Anglican priest before becoming a Catholic priest and cardinal. In 2019, the Catholic Church canonized him as a saint. By the 1830s, he had gained national prominence. The Tracts for the Times (1833–1841), Apologia Pro Vita Sua (1865–1866), Grammar of Assent (1870), and The Dream of Gerontius (1865) are among his most important works.
