This controversial new book considers the Cohen lyrics in an entirely new way. It looks at the structure of his language, providing insight into how Cohen provides intimacy and challenge simultaneously. It considers the lyrics methodically, showing how themes recur over the 50-year time period. This is not an assorted collection of pop songs, but a coherent body of work, with six main themes occurring continually throughout. 'Smudging the Air' does not provide a definitive meaning for each lyric.
