This volume records the proceedings of a 2003 NATO Advanced Research Workshop. The goals of workshop were to review influenza disease and virological surveillance standards and capacities; identify possibilities for enhanced collaboration among existing national and international networks; initiate preparation of a response plan; and enhance awareness of influenza-related research capabilities of various countries. The participants, who are military and civilian influenza experts from around the world, discussed influenza surveillance in their own countries, vaccines, and examples of military and civilian cooperation in surveillance. Specific topics include WHO surveys of military surveillance for communicable diseases; influenza antiviral drug discovery; and pathogenesis and treatment of severe influenza.
