A definitive disc featuring 's fine -oriented , this program includes 's hit versions of and plus six of 's riff "Studies" (which had begun with recorded by ): Listening to those recordings and others -- such as -- it seems obvious that had one of the most underrated of the era. None of his sidemen were major names, but tenor saxophonist was a fine player, many of the musicians were quite capable of taking concise solos, and, though 's charts may have been a bit derivative at times, they always swung. ~ Scott Yanow
