Jennifer Leonard is a disturbed young woman, living her life on the fast lane. She is accused of murdering her estranged husband, Michael, a forty-two years old, charming, cheating bastard. Jennifer is going to have a hard time at court. She has a call girl past - more than enough to condemn her. For weeks and weeks, she and Michael had ugly fights every night before the murder; there were witnesses who called the police to the arguing couple. However, in a sense, Jennifer is fortunate. She is a friend of Alex French's, which means she has a seasoned private investigator on her side. Jennifer and French have the most interesting history. They met ten years ago when Jennifer was a pretty, vibrant nineteen years old girl with a great, thin body and sexy eyes and she was craving for attention. She tried to pick up the affable, bright detective. He was kind enough to care about her and the two became good friends. (You have got to love Alex French, right? He is the kind-hearted friend or teenage crush every woman would want.) Now Jennifer is in trouble and needs Alex's help again. The rules are easy: as long as Jennifer is honest, Alex is willing to help her. She promises that she will be honest, true that she does not remember much to volunteer to Alex. The day Michael was gunned down, Jennifer was hanging out in a bar, talking to an old chum, a bartender. She noticed a man with strange, graying hair and an odd moustache, also chatting with the bartender. Then she had a drink and could not remember anything else for the rest of the day. What happened to her, where she went after leaving the bar - everything is blank. When Jennifer came to, she was in an apartment she has never seen before, holding on to a small handgun, and Michael's corpse was next to her. She can't even remember whether she has shot him down or not. The killing weapon belongs to her. A couple of years ago, she has bought a self-defense weapon, a Beretta, she kept it in her bedroom, but she never used it. Seeing Michael's dead body, Jennifer freaked out, so she ran out of the apartment, screaming for the police. Once getting out of the building, she caught a taxi cab and rushed to a friend's place to hide away. However, within a few hours, she turned herself in. Alex has an insight that Jennifer never harmed Michael. He asks around in the building where the murder occurred. The neighbors have heard the couple fighting, but have not heard any shot. Alex suspects that despite the reports of the neighbors, the apartment was uninhibited. Who was the enigmatic white haired man whom Jennifer saw in the bar? What does Michael's new girlfriend, Angie, has to do with the murder? It is obvious that Angie hates Jennifer. She is an extremely pretty girl, living in luxury. Could she frame Jennifer for murdering Michael? Suspicion by Bernard Savage is one of the best thriller novels and summer reads of 2014. It is highly recommended for crime fiction fans and Alex French aficionados.
