Steve Benson and Harry Walters were ready to race away from the burning compound with the rescued captives until suddenly, Harry saw movement at the side of one building. Harry slammed the truck into park and ran back to eliminate any escaping terrorists, only to find more survivors. He led the young girls to the overcrowded truck, where one of the older women drove a second truck to escape the flaming infected stumbling from the failing gates. The escape is just the beginning of a harrowing journey.
Camp Verde was the picture of efficiency and organization for the survivors gathered by Sergeant Matt Monroe, Larry Benson, and Jake Curtis, who rescued Claire and Amy Jameson. The assembled group of civilians and soldiers managed to provide all their daily needs for themselves and thirty children for months. Matt was determined to get Claire and Amy to their grandfather in Pine Creek Canyon. He and Tate Hamilton returned from a trip to pick up a new big rig in preparation for the journey to find Camp Verde overrun by a massive horde of infected and a harried exodus underway.
Brian Jameson, with Billy and four soldiers, left Utopia for Pine Creek Canyon. They find two young survivors hiding in an abandoned fueling station that falls ill shortly after being rescued. Again, Brian and his team hold up for the sake of others. They do all they can to aid in the children's recovery. Once they get underway, they cross paths with another group recently driven onto the roads by the infected.
Pine Creek Canyon is the sanctuary all seem to be seeking but will it be ready? Liz Jameson hopes to see her daughters and husband again someday. When it becomes nearly overwhelming, she faces each day for the sake of the child she carries. Liz helps her father direct activities at the compound and the construction projects, anticipating more survivors to come to fill the days while she waits.
