They rescue a princess and her German lover in Zanzibar, take a shipment of opium to Shanghai, survive attacks by pirates in the South China Sea and the imperial warships in the South Indian Ocean and experience the gay destinations at the seaports. A homosexual relationship between the Merchant and the Servant is alluded to.The story is written in the style of the travelogues of the medieval voyagers to the East.
