The Anglerfish is a species of fish that uses an angler or a lure that works like a fishing rod. Just like when people use fishing rods (also called anglers) to catch fish, the Anglerfish is a type of fish that uses the same tactic to catch other types of fish (those that they can eat). Equipped with really big heads, Anglerfishes sometimes seem that they're all head. Their bodies are flat - that's why they can easily bury themselves in the sand and go unnoticed. The Anglerfish has a very big mouth - and it can open really wide, too. So wide, in fact, that the fish can easily swallow its prey (its food) in one gulp. Don't underestimate its mouth because it can open way beyond what you would expect. As for its most important characteristic (its angler or lure), this is actually a spine that's located at the top of its head (just above its eyes). Excited to learn more about the Anglerfish?
