Miraculously, a young, lonely, despairing woman finally manages to get social housing for her and her little daughter. But their joy is short-lived: their new neighbors refuse to accept them. Orin, the shy, sensitive daughter, feels this hostile rejection most keenly. Her mother can only watch on helplessly as she observes her anxiety on a daily basis. The only person who shows them any kind of warmth and love is a poor, unmarried gypsy woman, who lives in a small, improvised apartment in the basement. To help both mother and child, she advises them to host a party to celebrate the young woman's birthday with the neighbors. Both ar enthusiastic about their kind neighbor's excellent idea - especially the young mother, who finally sees an opportunity to have her child accepted by their new surroundings. Relieved and hopeful, the three begin getting ready for the big celebration. On the day of the event, mother and daughter wait expectantly to welcome their guests. But after several hours, they realize that none of the neighbors will be coming to their party. In a pained voice, the little girl quietly asks her mother: are people evil?
