Excerpt from The British Army, Vol. 1: Its Origin, Progress, and Equipment

It is full of interest to all: during the eight centuries that have rolled away Since the Norman Conquest, this country has under gone such changes, that its history appears like the fiction of the romancer; neither can we attain to any consummation or resting-place, for events as fitful and remarkable as any that have passed are still in progress, our armaments are even now in a state of transition, 'brown Bess is converted into a Snider, our wooden walls into iron plates.
