Mired for three decades in an infernal cycle of violence, in 2015 the Central African Republic launched a transitional justice process to address the serious violations of fundamental rights, among other consequences of the many situations of violence that have punctuated its history. A Special Criminal Court and a Truth, Justice, Reparation and Reconciliation Commission were set up to work alongside the International Criminal Court and ordinary Central African courts in the fight against impunity for serious crimes under international law committed in the country. However, following a peace process that culminated in the signing of a peace agreement between the Central African government and armed opposition groups in February 2019, the complementary articulation between the imperatives of the fight against impunity and those of peace is subject to compromise. This sheds light on the dilemmas of justice and peace in the context of CAR's post-crisis situation, the issues of which are addressed in this book.
