In 1950, Inspector Arthur Barkley Carroll, a relatively young man for his position at Scotland Yard, boasted a highly prestigious education from Eton and Oxford. He had inherited a small fortune, an impressive home in London, and a 1929 Rolls Royce Phantom, and he was single.
While attending a luxurious charity dinner, he was called by his associate, Sergeant John Brown, to a murder scene on The London Bridge. The time was nearly midnight, and the air was thick with a London mist. The victim, a well-dressed young woman, had a beautiful multicolored scarf wrapped around her neck, which was the cause of her death. Inspector Carroll and Sergeant Brown found her purse and a business card with her address, along with the latch key to her flat. The next morning, while inspecting the flat, a stunning woman enters through the front door. Sergeant Brown recognizes her as Monica Stone, the most famous movie actress in Europe, but Inspector Carroll has no idea who she is. After a brief discussion, it becomes apparent that the flat is owned by Monica, and her best friend, Judy Lawson, the victim, lives in the flat. Monica is in complete shock. Later, she announces her intention to help find the murderer, much to Inspector Carroll's disapproval. However, she proceeds with a series of events that ultimately lead to the discovery of the killer, providing unwanted assistance and causing frustration for Inspector Carroll.
As it turns out, Monica is very intelligent and makes a substantial contribution to solving the case of her best friend's murder. Both have strong personalities, and over time, they are slowly drawn to each other. He's a brilliant detective, wealthy, and single, not swayed by Monica's fame. She is famous, wealthy, and frustrated that Arthur doesn't view her in that way. However, as time goes on, things work out for both of them.
