The Kentuckians
was Fox, Jr.'s first full-length novel, although it was preceded by his novella, A Cumberland Vendetta, and a collection of short stories, Hell Fer Sartain and Other Stories. In The Kentuckians, as in later works, Fox, Jr. pits the rural residents of the mountains against the rich and often uncaring of the cities. Central to the book is the question of whether a young woman of the cities will find a way to be with her love, a man from the mountains.
