Hugo Grotius lived during Eighty and Thirty Years' Wars which influenced his concern with the issues of conflicts between nations and religions. The Rights of War and Peace was his most well known book, begun in prison and published in 1625 during his exile in Paris, and was an attempt to restrain conflict on a wide moral consensus.
