Messrs. Gaines and Borland with three com panies of Kentucky and Arkansas Cavalry. Were out on a scouting party. It was thought that there were small bodies of the enemy's cavalry prowling about the country, but no one had the slightest apprehension that a large force could be so near Gen. Wool's camp.
