Book five finds the Montford twins traveling to a parallel universe in an attempt to save their counterparts - three of who have been killed and a fourth permanently imprisoned. Once there, they must choose sides between the Luddites, an agrarian-based culture that embraces personal freedoms and rejects technology, or the Lantanians, a centralized government that embraces technology and seeks to have control over its citizen. The two-world factions are in a constant state of conflict that frequently erupts into shooting wars that threatens the twins' lives. In siding with the Luddites, the twins must try to rescue their last remaining counterpart from the Lantanians and travel back in time to save the other three. However, dark forces within the Luddite community seek to derail the Montfords' efforts. Before leaving the parallel world, the Montfords also try to reconcile the differences between the two-world factions and negotiate a permanent peace between the two sides. Ultimately, their success will determine whether they can return home to their four children and a normal life.
