emerged from Texas with their own take on the style. Unfortunately, on this 1991 release, the band's particular brand of lyrical positivism gets mired in a non-stop supply of plodding
grooves. The group seems to favor an excess of vocal grandstanding and pat horn charts over the bottom-heavy half of the deep
equation -- ubiquitous slapped basslines a la
Larry Graham
alone do not constitute a good
band. Here, the collective legacy of
P-Funk
Sly Stone
, and
Curtis Mayfield
gets glibly rehashed as the spastic soundtrack for a very unhip frat party. Even a halfway decent stab at
Mayfield
's
"Mighty Mighty"
