There is no such thing as 'the' courtly identity. The categories of courtly culture intersect and thus generate a multitude of ambivalences that are constantly used for creative reinterpretations. Joran Balks examines in his study these ambivalences and potentials for reinterpretation in three Arthurian novels from the heyday of courtly literature around 1200. Through a systematic intercategorial intersectionality analysis, he presents a complex web of intersections between identity categories by which courtly identity can be negotiated. This diversity also shows that the discussed literary works not only presuppose a high inherent complexity of the question of courtly identity, but also receive it vividly and productively.
