This trio session with bassist
Alec Dankworth
and drummer
Clark Tracey
finds pianist
David Newton
in a rather low key mood. His interpretations of
"The Night We Called It a Day"
and solo take of
"The Way You Look Tonight,"
the disc's final track, are dramatic and lyrical. His original songs, however, just don't stand up to repeated hearings, serving more or less as background music regardless of the tempo. If more tracks had the feeling of the finale, the overall CD would be more memorable. ~ Ken Dryden
