From the wild northwest fall, 1965, a 21-year-old would-be writer secretly sets out alone on a 16,000-mile quest to discover Spain. Picaro, linguist, sophomore, virgin, lover, he records his travels to Salamanca to study at that famous university. Eventually expelled, short funds, fired, seduced, what happens when he sets out in winter 1966 to walk Spain? This journal tells that uncensored story-pack, tent, wits, sleeping bag, and more.
[4/15/65]
Dear Duke,
This summer should be the beginning of a stairway to Spain. Home for a day perhaps after I'm finished with finals, then grind-logging until the middle of September. Then old GV is heading east to catch a boat for Lisbon, Portugal on October first for $144, if all goes according to present plans. Once that boat passes the lady with the hot hands and green pants, your guess about my destiny is just as good as mine. I haven't passed the good word on to Grandma and Gramp yet, as I imagine it will come as quite a shock to them, but I've got to go....
See ya. Out of paper.
Su hermano, Jorge
