The tales in this book, whilst sometimes silly and sometimes even crude, they attempt to portray a liberated woman's viewpoint to her sexuality. It might not succeed entirely but it is an attempt to overcome the false self image that arises when women follow blindly, the expectations of men.
Jung speaks of the
anima
-that is, man's femininity- and the trap women fall into, trying to fit into the expectations that the
expects from her.
Women in the Western world nowadays seem to seek images which define their identity. This search is motivated by a kind of disorientation and deep uncertainty in modern women.
In a matriarchal structure, such as exists in some tribes in South India, women have natural confidence in their own womanhood. They know their importance and that they are different from men in a special way, and this does not imply any inferiority. They are able to assert their human existence and being in a natural way.
So writes Marie Louise Von Franz in her book,
The Feminine in Fairy Tales.
