Sample question in this volume:
Mom is 4 times as old as Chelsea. If she is 27 years older than Chelsea, how old is each?
Reasoning and solution:
From "Mom is 4 times as old as Chelsea", the age of Chelsea is the amount in 1 group and the age of Mom's is the amount in 4 groups. The difference between the amounts from the groups is 27. When we find the difference between the numbers of groups, we divide the difference between the numbers of groups into the difference between the amounts from the groups to find the amount in 1 group.
The difference between the numbers of groups is: 4-1=3
We divide the difference between the number of groups, 3, into the difference between the amounts from the groups, 27, to find the amount in each group or the age of Chelsea:
27
