Rogier Gerrits examines the transformation of the function of allegory in French Early Modern spiritual literature of both Reformed and Catholic denominations. The theological debate concerning the allegorical Biblical exegesis, which was instigated as a consequence of the Protestant emphasis on the literal sense of Scripture, is at the center of the investigation. The interdenominational approach of the thesis helps to reflect on the hitherto prevailing understanding in research of the transformation of allegory as a rhetorical and hermeneutic figure in the Early Modern period by presenting the theological and poetic discussion of its application not as dichotomic-denominational process, but rather as a gradual process that evolves in both denominations.
